I have never felt a particular attraction to burning things, so surprisingly, pyrography is the medium that has given me my artistic impetus. Burning into a matrix was an act originally born from pain and anger, but over time has transmuted into something lovely and joyous.
My pyrographs are created with the eyes of someone who lives among and interacts with nature. When something in my surroundings catches my eye, I question why it demands a second look. I explore the elusive attraction by sketching and taking pictures.
In planning for my work, I often employ geometric principles to develop compositions. Creating layers of textures and color invite the viewer in and keep the eye moving around the piece. Innovation and discovering unconventional materials is deeply satisfying; from using gunpowder and torches to resin and caulk.
I breathe in with my eyes: surprising glimpses and lucid observations. I breathe out with flame: scorching the surface to reveal the spaces between, the branching geometry and the invitation into something deeper beyond the physical form.
